We understand that different items require different temperatures and so we come up with customized solutions for our clients, including shipping full truckloads and less-than-load. Temperature-controlled vans and trucks have been used to ship perishable foods as well as beverages for years. These trucks can also be used to transport specialized equipment, certain plant life, and medication. The trucks are often used to keep items cool or frozen. Our refrigerated trucks feature freeze protection to prevent freezing of items that are not supposed to freeze such as wines and food products that are susceptible to damage by ice crystals.

The Different Types of Temperature Controlled Shipping

Temperature controlled logistics encompasses the storage, preservation, and transportation of cargo that is sensitive to temperature and other atmospheric conditions. The aim of temperature control is to main a certain temperature for a particular product. We specialize in pharmaceutical products as well as meat, fish, produce, and other perishables. The different types of temperature controlled logistics include:

  • Refrigerated vehicles: These include conventional vans and trucks that have cargo compartments that are temperature controlled using a thermostat system. The electronic thermostat control systems can increase and reduce the temperature. Larger refrigerated vehicles have dedicated powered units as well as electrical backups to power the refrigeration unit while smaller vehicles use their engines to supply power to the unit.
  • Passive shipping containers: The refrigeration can be done on a passive shipping container that is detached from the vehicle that is hauling it. These containers have insulating materials and electronic temperature control systems. Although they do not need external input or human intervention to function, note that they expire after a set period. Passive shipping containers are ideal for short journeys. They are impact resistant and are often used as an additional layer of protection even when using other temperature control logistics methods.
  • Active shipping systems: Active shipping systems are similar to passive shipping containers in most ways, the major difference being that their scope is much larger. Active shipping systems are used in sea and air freight. They are basically large cargo containers that are thermostatically controlled. The containers are powered through internal or external battery sources in air freight and through the ship’s onboard power supply in sea freight.

Sub-zero or elevated temperatures can affect the chemical stability of medicine as well as its physical properties. Most medicines require the temperature to be maintained between 2 º C and 8ºC, a temperature range called the “cold-chain” that must be maintained by manufacturers, wholesalers, and shippers.
